About the Process

  • During the second semester of the 2022-2023 school year, our school community engaged in a process to make 21st-century learning a reality for all students.  The ultimate goal was to unite our community in shaping our district's future direction through the Portrait of a Graduate design.  This approach involved the entire school community - educators in partnership with students, parents, businesses, and others - to ensure a meaningful impact in our schools.  Over 150 individuals came together to create our Portrait of a Graduate Design Team, including students, parents, business leaders, community leaders, faith leaders, higher education professionals, teachers, school counselors, building principals, and central office administrators.  This committee was tasked with identifying core competencies that every Brunswick City School student should possess and understanding how these competencies would help prepare students to succeed in a quickly changing world.

Each Design Team member was presented with a list of competencies that included definitions of each competency. Each member then ranked their top seven, identifying the ones each felt were most critical. Additionally, over 2,000 BCSD students and staff participated in a survey to determine which competencies that were most important to them.
